Kamla’s Abduction Highlights Plight of Hindu Minorities [Tando Allahyar, Pakistan]

The abduction and forced marriage of 15-year-old Kamla Meghwar to Muhammad Nadeem in Sindh’s Tando Allahyar district has again exposed the persistent anguish faced by Pakistan’s vulnerable Hindu community. This reprehensible act of violence against a minor girl from a marginalized minority is utterly unacceptable and must be vehemently condemned.

On March 12th, Nadeem allegedly abducted Kamla from her home, forcibly converted her to Islam, and then married her – all crimes under Pakistani law. Yet two months later, Kamla’s distraught family states that authorities have taken no tangible action despite filing a kidnapping case against the perpetrator.

This appalling incident of a young Hindu girl’s innocence being shattered is just the latest in a long, traumatic pattern of crimes perpetrated against religious minorities in Pakistan with a sense of institutionalized impunity. Time and again, we have witnessed the devastation of abductions, forced conversions, and marriages of Hindu and Christian girls systematically occurring without any accountability for the perpetrators.

Hindu families are often powerless to seek justice as police turn a blind eye or are severely hampered by regressive societal attitudes that embolden such criminal acts. The uncomfortable truth is that the very system meant to protect Pakistan’s minorities has become rotten with indifference and injustice when it comes to securing their fundamental human rights.

We demand the immediate recovery and repatriation of Kamla to her family. The perpetrators, including Nadeem and any potential accomplices, must face strict prosecution under the law. Kamla’s young life has already been irreparably traumatized – the least we can do is ensure she does not become another statistic amongst the many stolen daughters of the Hindu community whose cries for help go unanswered.

This vicious cycle of dehumanizing crimes against Hindu girls and women must end now. We urge Pakistani authorities at all levels to establish concrete legal protections and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard the rights of minorities. Religious freedom and the ability to practice one’s faith without fear of persecution are fundamental human rights that can no longer be denied.

Bringing Kamla’s captors to justice and reuniting her with her loved ones is just the start. Substantive reforms providing constitutional and legal guarantees for Hindu families must be enacted immediately. Otherwise, the promise of a progressive Pakistan ensuring equality for all its citizens will forever remain an empty dream shattered by the harsh realities faced by its most vulnerable people.
