On 15th October, 19-year-old Sikh boy was left “shaken and angered” after being the victim of a hate crime in New York City bus. Reportedly, he was attacked for wearing a turban.

As per the press release of the Sikh Coalition, “I am shaken and angered by this attack. I believe that no one should be assaulted or harassed because of how they look, and everyone should be able to go about their business in public in peace.”

The press release further read, “His turban was specifically targeted, and the perpetrator used xenophobic language throughout the incident.”

“Given that this young Singh’s turban was targeted during the attack, we are heartened that this incident is being investigated as a hate crime,”said Sikh Coalition Staff Attorney Amreen Partap Singh Bhasin in a statement.

She emphasised that current local and global events are undeniably fuelling concern in the Sikh and other communities.

The victim thanked everyone from many communities who reached out in his support, as well as the police who are treating this hate crime seriously. He also wanted to maintain his anonymity at this time. According to the statement, the young man was assaulted many times while boarding an MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) bus in New York City.
